In the blessed land of Africa, where simplicity meets the thirst for truth, the Orthodox Mission continues its work silently yet dynamically, enlightening souls and shaping consciences. In the region of Iringa, where there is a strong presence of Orthodox families, the Holy Diocese of Arusha and Central Tanzania is developing a unique educational initiative: priests and catechists visit public schools and teach religious education classes.
The catechists read passages from the New Testament with the children, discuss the lives of the Saints, and introduce young students to the treasures of patristic wisdom. The goal of the Mission is not merely to transmit information, but to plant in the hearts of the students the seed of faith and to reveal a ‘new life’ founded on humility and love. The truth of Christ thus walks alongside secular knowledge, illuminating souls and shaping the character of the children.
Each catechist is deeply moved by the students’ response. Some of the children, through these lessons, encounter Christ and His Church for the very first time. Silent smiles, wide-eyed wonder, questions filled with purity and thirst — all bear witness to the fact that the missionary work touches living souls and transforms lives.
This effort is neither fragmented nor occasional. It is supported by the close collaboration between the Diocese and the school principals and teachers, who not only allow but actively support the teaching of religious education. They have recognized that the Church comes to support the child and contribute to the advancement of society with ethics and responsibility.
Iringa is thus emerging as a place where the Word of God takes deep root in souls ready to receive the light of Christ. At the center of this effort is the child — as a sacred being, as an image of God, and as a bearer of the future.
This is the Orthodox Mission in Africa: a ministry and light of Christ that gently illuminates every person without making noise — like a whisper in the heart that speaks the truth without imposing it.
