CONSTRUCTION OF TEMPLES

The Holy Metropolis of Arusha, carrying out its missionary and pastoral ministry in Central Tanzania, bears daily responsibility not only for the spiritual guidance of the faithful but also for ensuring the necessary conditions for proper ecclesiastical life. Within this framework, the care for the maintenance, renovation, and construction of Holy Churches emerges as an essential priority.

In the wider region of Central Tanzania, recent years have witnessed remarkable missionary growth, as entire communities and villages embrace the Orthodox Church and are baptized en masse in the name of the Holy Trinity. This joyful reality gives rise to an immediate pastoral need: the construction of Holy Churches, so that the newly illumined faithful may have their own place of worship.

At the same time, many Holy Churches that were built years ago with limited resources now show signs of deterioration due to age and climatic conditions. Although the local communities possess zeal and deep faith, they do not always have the necessary financial means for proper maintenance and restoration. As a result, deficiencies arise that affect the safety, functionality, and dignity of the sacred spaces. For these reasons, continuous maintenance and improvement works are carried out on existing Churches, so that they may adequately serve the liturgical needs of the faithful.

For the Orthodox Church, the Holy Temple is the primary place where ecclesiastical life is experienced. There the people of God gather, there the Holy Services are celebrated, and above all the Divine Liturgy—the center and heart of the Church’s life. Care for the proper condition and the construction of new Churches is not a matter of outward display, but an expression of reverence for the Mystery celebrated within them and for the sanctity of the sacred space.

A substantial contribution to this effort is offered by the “Missionary Shelter of Saint Dionysios of Olympus” which actively supports the work of the Holy Metropolis of Arusha. Through the help and intercessions of Saint Dionysios, beautiful Holy Churches have been built in honor of the Dormition of the Theotokos, Saint John the Theologian, Saints Paisios the Athonite and Luke the Physician, the Transfiguration of the Savior, Saint Porphyrios, and Saint Photios the Great.

This sacred work continues unceasingly. During the present period, the Cathedral Church of the Theotokos is being erected in Arusha, the Holy Church in the name of Holy Trinity is under construction in Dodoma, the capital of Tanzania, and the Monastery of the Archangel Michael in Kindamali is being expanded. At the same time, existing Churches are being renovated to ensure their durability and the dignified celebration of the Holy Services.

The aim is not luxury, but basic dignity, safety, and functionality, so that the Holy Churches may remain living centers of faith and witness.

As the Missionary Shelter, we extend a heartfelt appeal to every person of good will to support this endeavor. Any contribution constitutes a meaningful offering towards the preservation and construction of Holy Churches and strengthens the presence and witness of the Orthodox Church in Central Tanzania. The participation of all transforms this work into a shared ecclesiastical responsibility and a tangible expression of love for the Mission.
