SOUP KITCHENS

“For I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink… Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.”

In distant lands, in the heart of the African continent, hunger and poverty are not just numbers or statistics. They are the dim eyes of children weakened by starvation, exhausted bodies, and desperate parents who cannot even provide the bare minimum. They are families struggling daily for the most basic needs: a plate of food, a drop of water, a moment of relief. They are sleepless nights, silent prayers, and unseen tears that wet the earth.

Poverty is a heavy Cross, placed upon the shoulders of our African brothers and sisters. And yet, they do not carry it alone. The Missionary Shelter of Saint Dionysios of Olympus humbly and responsibly supports the pastoral and charitable work of the Holy Metropolis of Arusha, under the spiritual guidance of His Eminence Bishop Agathonikos.

Through the donations of the devout members and benefactors of the Association, the Holy Metropolis offers:

• A daily meal for orphans at the missionary center in Kindamali, Iringa.
• Love-feasts after Divine Liturgies in cities and villages. During the Liturgy, the names of donors are commemorated, and memorial services are held for the repose of their loved ones.
• Distribution of food parcels and essential supplies in areas afflicted by extreme poverty, supporting families who have placed all their hope in the mercy of God.

In a world tormented by injustice, poverty, and hunger, the Church calls each of us to become a bearer of love, comfort, and hope. In the face of the suffering of our brothers and sisters in Tanzania, we cannot remain silent. We cannot remain spectators. Christ hungers and thirsts in the faces of the little ones and the weak. He asks not for words, but for a heart that shares, hands that give, and a soul that loves.

We invite all of you to join in this effort. Every offering, no matter how small, becomes a plate of food, a parcel of comfort, a smile on a child’s face, hope for a struggling family. Let us not allow the flame of love to fade. Where love exists, there Christ finds rest. With our hearts turned toward our fellow man, and with faith in Christ, let us support the work of the Church in the suffering land of Tanzania

Many members and donors of our Association send donations for the celebration of the Divine Liturgy and for these meals, either for the health of loved ones or for the repose of the departed. Sometimes as many as 1,000 people may partake in these humble meals. After all, “Africa is a vast stomach that must first be filled before one can speak to it about God”, as His Eminence, Metropolitan Agathonikos of Arusha, has noted.

A little rice, beans, and occasionally meat bring smiles to thousands of our brothers and sisters…
