With great joy, our Association, “Missionary Shelter of Saint Dionysios of Olympus,” welcomed the 5th Grade of the 2nd Primary School of Katerini “Christos Tsolakis” to the Holy Monastery of Saint Dionysios of Olympus, where our offices are also housed. This visit constituted a meaningful educational and missionary experience for the students, who were informed about the pastoral and philanthropic work of the Holy Metropolis of Arusha in Central Tanzania.
The Very Reverend Archimandrite Fr. Maximos, General Archieratical Vicar of the Metropolis of Arusha, conveyed to the children the heartfelt blessings of His Eminence Metropolitan Agathonikos of Arusha and shared vivid testimonies from daily life and the life of the Church in Africa, as well as the broader spiritual and social contribution of the Orthodox Mission. The presentation was not limited to a simple briefing but developed into a lively dialogue with the children, who listened with interest, expressed questions, and shared thoughts and reflections. Particular emotion was stirred by references to the difficulties faced daily by our Tanzanian brethren, as well as to their joy for every small or great assistance they receive.
It is worth noting that our relationship with the 2nd Primary School of Katerini “Christos Tsolakis” has now acquired a particularly special character. Just ten days ago, the students of the 3rd Grade visited the Holy Monastery once again, were informed about the missionary work, and delivered, on behalf of the school community, boxes of school supplies to be sent to schools in Central Tanzania.
The experience of the previous visit was shared with their classmates, and the message concerning the needs of the Mission found fertile ground in the children’s hearts, leading to yet another moving initiative of offering.
The children contributed a monetary amount for the drilling of a water borehole at a school in the Iringa region, so that the students may gain access to clean and safe water. This act constitutes a tangible expression of love and solidarity, proving that a child’s heart can become a bearer of hope.
At the same time, the students prepared drawings and handmade crafts filled with messages of friendship, which will be sent to Africa and delivered to fellow students in schools of Central Tanzania. Through this symbolic yet deeply meaningful exchange, a bridge of love is built, uniting two worlds with a common reference point: Christ and His Church.
Fr. Maximos warmly praised the commendable effort of the children, emphasizing the educational importance of such initiatives. He stressed that acquaintance with the work of the Mission cultivates in children sensitivity and a spirit of offering and service to their fellow human beings. Through information and experiential engagement, children learn to see the pain of their brother, to show compassion, and to participate actively in works of love.
This ongoing communication and cooperation highlights the decisive role of the school community. When education meets philanthropy and knowledge is accompanied by acts of love, then fruits are born that transcend the limits of a simple school activity.
As the Missionary Shelter of Saint Dionysios of Olympus, we warmly thank the School Administration, the teachers, the parents, and above all the children for their luminous example. Their offering stands as a living testimony that the missionary calling is the responsibility of the entire Church — even its youngest members.
