The Orthodox Church Supports the Ibogo Primary School in Iringa, Tanzania

A School Bag, A Ray of Hope

The Orthodox Church Supports the Ibogo Primary School in Iringa, Tanzania

A special educational initiative took place at the primary school of the village of Ibogo, in the Iringa region of central Tanzania. Priests from the Holy Metropolis of Arusha and nuns from the Holy Monastery of Archangel Michael in Kindamali visited the school and distributed school bags, notebooks, and stationery to the students.

The response from the local community was deeply moving. Present were the school principal, teachers, the village’s deputy leader, and the children’s parents. Many parents came spontaneously, simply because they heard that “the Orthodox are coming”, showing the deep respect and trust that has been cultivated through the Church’s work.

The presence of the Orthodox Church in schools and in the lives of children has begun to become a point of reference — a steady source of light and hope in a reality full of hardship.

Many Thanks to the Donors

The provision of the school supplies distributed to the young students was made possible thanks to the generosity of Mr. Nikolaos Amanatidis’ family and the young students Evangelos and Marios Partsenidis from Australia. May God bless Mr. Amanatidis and his work, and grant wisdom and progress to young Evangelos and Marios. Their love traveled thousands of kilometers to reach the hands of children in great need — children they have never met. This is the power of faith and love in action.

A Harsh Reality Behind the Classroom Walls

Yet behind the children’s smiles lies a harsh and painful daily reality. The Ibogo school lacks even basic infrastructure. The first and second grades share a single classroom, with all the challenges this entails for the learning process. The fifth-grade classroom has neither doors nor windows. There is no teacher’s lounge. A space originally intended for storage has been makeshiftly converted into a staff office, but it also stores food and other supplies, as there are no other facilities.

The teachers conveyed the situation both verbally to the priests and nuns and in writing to His Eminence Metropolitan Agathonikos of Arusha, describing the conditions at the school and the shortages that burden the children’s everyday lives.

“These Children Are the Future”

Despite these difficult conditions, the children do not give up. On the contrary, they try hard to learn. They dream. They fight to get an education. And in their eyes, one sees not only the hope of a single classroom or school, but of an entire region. Every form of help that reaches their hands — like the school bags, notebooks, and pencils they now hold with pride — becomes a flame of light in a place where scarcity is the norm.

The presence of the Orthodox Church in schools is a living witness of love. It is the voice of the Gospel through action. It is a quiet, yet powerful response to people’s needs. The students feel that they are not alone. The teachers find courage. The parents feel that someone hears their pain.

Let us never forget: Every child who receives an education is a light in the world. And every light that is lit in Tanzania is a fruit of love — your love.
