The Church Stands by the Students of Sasamambo

In the heart of Tanzania, in the small and forgotten village of Sasamambo, where daily life is harsh and the struggle for survival is constant, a ray of hope and love recently shone upon dozens of young students. It was a moment when missionary service embraced education, and charity was wrapped in children’s smiles.

The association “Missionary Shelter of Saint Dionysios of Olympus”, always devoted to supporting the philanthropic and educational mission of the Holy Diocese of Arusha and Central Tanzania, organized yet another meaningful initiative, aiming to offer children the basic tools of knowledge and dignity.

With the blessing of His Grace Bishop Agathonikos of Arusha, nuns from the Holy Monastery of Archangel Michael in Kindamali, along with clergy from the Diocese, visited the local Primary School in Sasamambo, bringing with them school bags, notebooks, pencils, pens, uniforms, crayons, and other school supplies for the children.

This initiative was made possible thanks to the generous support of the Missionary Team from Stuttgart, Germany, led by Mrs. Sara Amanatidou, to whom we owe our deepest gratitude.

The children welcomed the mission with songs, dances, and eyes filled with longing and hope. Their joy was indescribable—not only because of the material goods they received but because they felt that someone truly cared about them.

However, as great as the joy was, equally painful was the reality revealed behind the children’s smiles.

The Harsh Truth Behind the Smiles

The Primary School in Sasamambo is in a severely poor condition—without exaggeration. Most classrooms have no floors, windows, or desks. All that exists are walls and a blackboard. The children sit cross-legged on the bare earth, trying to write on their knees or directly on the ground. This is their “classroom.”

The windows are simply holes in the walls—no glass, no shutters, no protection. On rainy days, moisture and water are everywhere. Mud mixes with the children’s bags, notebooks, and clothes. The children are left wet, exposed, and vulnerable. On the remaining days, dust and scorching heat make learning nearly impossible. And yet, under such conditions, young students and devoted teachers strive to keep the flame of knowledge alive.

The situation is even harder for the lower grades. The kindergarten and the 1st and 2nd grades do not even have their own classrooms. The younger children are forced to attend lessons in the afternoons, borrowing the rooms of the older grades. This means limited teaching time, disruption, and obstacles to the smooth flow of education.

There are no toilets or basic hygiene facilities. The children are exposed to disease, danger, and daily humiliation. This is not just poverty—it is an affront to human dignity.

What’s most painful is that the teachers, despite their dedication and self-sacrifice, are forced to teach in an environment that does not promote learning but reinforces illiteracy. How can a child concentrate while sitting on wet soil? How can they believe in a better tomorrow when today they have no pencil, no light, no desk, no safety?

Care That Gives Birth to Hope

The school principal, along with the teachers, expressed deep gratitude for the Orthodox Church’s concern for educational support. They offered a simple but heartfelt treat to the visiting mission and, with dignity, described the issues they face.

They also handed over an official letter to His Grace Bishop Agathonikos, expressing both their deep appreciation and a heartfelt request for the renovation of the school and its classrooms.

The nuns and priests, deeply moved by the harsh reality, did not remain indifferent. They immediately offered funds for the construction of hygiene facilities, putting an end to a daily shame that no child should have to endure.

Let’s Build the School of Their Dreams Together

Education is not a privilege—it is a fundamental human right. And all children in the world deserve free access to it. Our association, The Missionary Shelter of Saint Dionysios of Olympus, makes a heartfelt appeal to all its members, friends, donors, and the broader educational and ecclesiastical community to support the renovation of the Primary School in the village of Sasamambo.

Together, we can transform a crumbling space into a real school. We can provide proper classrooms, desks, windows, roofs, light—and hope. Let us create an environment that inspires and encourages. Let us build a place where children can dream, create, and believe in a better future. Let us unite our hearts and our strength. Let us stand by them. Let us become the reason for the change they are waiting for.

Sasamambo needs us…
