The Light of Orthodoxy Spreads in Tanzania

During the period of the Feast of Theophany, group baptisms were conducted at the Missionary Center of the Holy Metropolis of Arusha in Kidamali, Iringa, by His Eminence, Metropolitan Agathonikos of Arusha.

At the baptismal font of the Missionary Center, the catechumens approached the holy font with reverence and emotion. Metropolitan Agathonikos baptized each faithful, while relatives and attendees participated in prayer. Throughout the baptismal ceremony, heavy rain prevailed. Despite the difficult weather conditions, everyone endured patiently, remaining focused on the Sacrament. The moment was filled with sacredness, as each newly baptized person began their journey within the Orthodox Church.

In his address to the newly baptized, His Eminence emphasized the importance of a conscious ecclesiastical life and a steadfast path within the Orthodox tradition, highlighting that baptism is not merely an event in life but the beginning of a continuous spiritual practice and witness. The newly baptized individuals participated with joy, reverence, and an evident thirst for Christ, taking part in the life of the Church for the first time and offering a hopeful message for the future of Orthodoxy in the region.

The contribution of donors and members of the Missionary Home of Saint Dionysios in Olympus was crucial, as they consistently and faithfully support the missionary work through the sponsorship program. Thanks to their love and sacrificial dedication, systematic catechesis of the interested, preparation for holy baptism, and substantial support for the newly baptized in their first—and often challenging—steps in Orthodoxy are made possible.

Particularly moving is the fact that an increasing number of Africans, seeking the authenticity of the Christian faith and spiritual fulfillment, turn to the Orthodox Church. Orthodoxy, with its liturgical life, theology of love, and experiential tradition, embraces the people of Africa, respecting their cultural identity and transforming it in Christ. The new faithful do not perceive the faith as something foreign or imposed, but as a living experience that addresses their deepest existential searches.

In this context, the Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa, under the inspired guidance of His Beatitude Pope and Patriarch Theodoros II, continues uninterruptedly and with sacrificial devotion its multifaceted missionary work across the African continent. With the guidance of the Hierarchs, the labor of clergy and catechists, and the support of devout Christians worldwide, the Patriarchate offers the light of the Gospel, hope, and solidarity to thousands of our fellow human beings.

After the baptisms, a “Love Feast” was held for the newly baptized and all attendees, generously donated by Ms. Kalliopi Myroti.

The baptisms at the Missionary Center in Kidamali represent yet another blessed fruit of this work and a living testament that the Church of Christ remains apostolic, dynamic, and open to every person who desires to walk “in the newness of life,” following the path of Orthodox faith.
