Our association, “Missionary Shelter”, had the special joy and blessing to recently welcome a remarkable act of volunteerism and love, carried out by the 2nd Primary School of Katerini.
The students, with the support and guidance of their teachers, collected a large number of school supplies—school bags, notebooks, pencils, and other essential materials—which they generously offered to assist students in schools in Central Tanzania. The donated items were delivered by a delegation of the school community to the offices of our association at the Holy Monastery of Saint Dionysius on Mount Olympus. They will be sent in a Container of Love to the Holy Metropolis of Arusha, to be distributed under the loving care of His Eminence, Metropolitan Agathonikos of Arusha.
The students’ visit to the Monastery was an educational and spiritual experience. Accompanied by their teachers, the children venerated the main church (Katholikon), toured the Museum and Treasury, and had the opportunity, in the monastery’s guest house (archontariki), to learn about Orthodox missionary work and the activities of the Missionary Shelter in Africa. The presentation was conducted by Archimandrite Father Porphyrios, Protosyncellus of the Holy Metropolis of Arusha, and Archimandrite Father Maximos, General Ecclesiastical Commissioner, who emphasized the importance of serving one’s neighbor and bearing witness to Christ’s love in the impoverished communities of Africa.
This action was a life experience lesson. The students experienced firsthand what volunteerism, social responsibility, and global brotherhood mean, understanding that even a small contribution can bring smiles to children who lack basic necessities.
The Missionary Shelter warmly thanks the administration, teachers, and students of the 2nd Primary School of Katerini for the shining example they have set. At the same time, we extend an open invitation to teachers throughout Pieria to follow this initiative, supporting the missionary work of our Church in Africa and cultivating values of compassion and service.
For education, when accompanied by the Church, becomes a sowing of hope and a fruit of life for the entire world.
