During the Dormition Fast, in every corner of the Holy Diocese of Arusha and Central Tanzania—from the cities to the most remote villages where the message of the Gospel has reached—Holy Supplicatory Services (Paraklesis) to the Most Holy Theotokos are conducted with the blessing of His Grace Bishop Agathonikos.
The faithful gather with faith and reverence to honor our Panagia (Most Holy Mother of God), to present to her their prayers and petitions, to express their gratitude and trust, and to seek her maternal intercession and protection for their lives and families. In these Paraklesis services, they offer their hearts, their tears, their prayers, and their hope.
Even in areas where churches have not yet been built, the Paraklesis services are held in the homes of the faithful, in school classrooms, or in daycare centers—demonstrating that wherever there is faith and love for God, the Church is born and lives.
The priests of the parishes and missionary centers travel to every place where an Orthodox presence exists, strengthening the people’s faith through the Mysteries (Sacraments), prayer, and spiritual teaching. All pray and hope that, with God’s help and the support of devout benefactors, they will one day be able to build their own churches.
After the conclusion of the Paraklesis services, blessings are often offered to the faithful—especially to children: icons of the Theotokos, small booklets with services and lives of the Saints, as well as theological texts translated into the Swahili language. In addition, clothing, biscuits, lollipops, and other simple but heartfelt gifts are distributed, donated by members and benefactors of the Missionary Shelter. These moments are truly unique. They express the Church’s care for the human person and combine the truth of the faith with tangible love.
We humbly pray that the Most Holy Theotokos will enfold our Tanzanian brothers and sisters in her loving maternal embrace, overcoming their difficulties of their daily lives. May she strengthen them in faith, grant them comfort and hope in their trials, and gently guide them on the path of Orthodox witness and spiritual fruitfulness.
Through their simplicity, humility, and deep faith, may the miracle of the living Church emerge daily—a Church fragrant with prayer, love, and the grace of God.
